My apologies Cloud9 for lumping you in with the vendor Cloud9. Your post sounded like something out of their playbook.

My circuit through Macy's, Dillards, and Bed Bath & Beyond found nothing that I would recommend to my family or friends that they spend money on. The boxes look good and give you warm and fuzzies, but there is no substance to the words. "Luxurious" and "high density" mean nothing in the absence of a reference point. To pick on the vendor Cloud9 for example, they say nothing more about their 5.3 than it's firmer than their 4.2, but that doesn't help unless you know what their 4.2 feels like. But if they would specify the density, at least, you could compare it to something you do know about, and you could avoid the stuff that is completely worthless, like the 2.5 lb stuff. The reason they don't tell you is because they don't want you to know. Think about it.

You don't need calculus, a calculator, or a slide rule for this to make sense.

Haysdb--yeah, I kind of figured you thought I was someone else.

With latex all of this density, ILD business made much more sense. And if I were buying a memory foam mattress it might make the same sense too. What I am saying is that it just doesn't seem that important with a memory foam topper, mainly because the innerspring is providing all the support, while the foam is just adding a little softness to the bed. My object was to get something on the mattress that would keep my hip from going numb after twenty minutes.

Prior to that my experience with toppers was layering on convoluted PU egg crate pads to no avail, so concepts like density or acronyms like ILD were unknown to me. I just wanted to get a good night's sleep so I could function in the morning.

I'm not exactly the kind of person who buys into advertising hype or believes it's got to be luxurious because it says so on the package. Again, I reiterate. I just wanted a good night's sleep without one side of my body going numb. I had a lot of doubts this memory foam topper was going to solve my problem when I bought it. But it did.

It's as simple as that. It might not solve your problem or someone else's problem, but I'm happy. I found that I don't need to pay a premium to get the comfort I need, and that's what matters to me. The comfort factor. And I think it's valid to let other people know they might be just as satisfied going the same route.

Okay, that being said, it's fine for me to "sound like something out of their playbook" because I'm just a consumer and this is my experience with the product. But I think anyone who sells the product ought to be able to provide specifics on it and not gloss over the fact that he (or she) knows very little about it or simply doesn't want you to know by offering a lot of platitudes. You have a right to be pissed. Just not at me!

Hi there.  Well- the foam arrived- in one piece, and we aired it out for a day and a half.  It seemed like really nice foam- much better than the stuff at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

We did decide to put it underneath the thin, down Beckley topper.
Our first observations- my husband was fine with it all.  I had problems.  But- I think I was wide awake when going to sleep last night.  My problems initially stemmed from the fact, that I couldn't get "pillow happy."  Normally I sleep with lots of pillows, as I have allergies.  The pillows are all very soft and fluffy, and press down a great deal. Since I sleep on my side, my hand goes under the top pillow.

OK- so why couldn't my neck get happy?  Should I be using less pillows now, or more?  Or the same? This seemed like a real issue to me.

In addition, I feel a bit of  lower back pain (where one of my herniated disks is located.)  It was not bothering me prior to this weekend.

I really think the tossing around had really not much to do with the new foam topper- just restlessness.. but the jury is still out.

Thanks

Yes, you have to play around with the pillows when you put on different toppers.  Your upper body sinks in different ways with various materials.  I didn't change my pillow at all, but I do think I "scrunch" up the down pillow differently depending on what toppers I am using.

It can take a few days to adjust, I have had some back pain off and on since putting on the memory foam, some days it is just great, others I have a back ache till I get up and move around a bit.  Maybe that's just me because other mornings I'm fine.  I will say since putting the memory foam on, we have big grins on our faces when we get into bed - it has made the bed very comfortable - just adds the right sensation of "aaaaaahhh" underneath the Hastens topper.  I am also sleeping more soundly, less trips up during the night - some nights none at all.......that's a great side effect  Grin.

I agree with Bedbug.  Over the last three years every time we changed matttresses, toppers, etc. we had to change our pillow configuration.  We have bought as many pillows as mattresses.  It is amazing how something at your head can impact your lower back.

The more you sink in to a bed, the less height is required between your head and the bed.  So either less pillows or softer pillows are required when you soften your bed.

Imagine a SUPER soft mattress where you totally sink in.  You might not need a pillow at all.  That is an extreme example to help illustrate why pillow changes are in order when you change the firmness of your sleep surface.

Good post, cloud9! I see a Serta 2" 4 lbs. density memory foam topper on Overstock.com on sale for $79.95 ANY size. There are thousands of WONDERFULLY positive reviews for this topper. I think I might go that route and put it over my 1" 32 ILD latex and under my Cuddle Bed Ultimate fiber filled topper. I read this statement from someone on Absolute Comfort website:

"If we were to select what we feel is "the best memory foam mattress topper" we would probably choose the 2 inch 4 lb or the 3 inch 5lb. Either of these would be an excellent choice. And this is what we choose when we are asked to recommend "the best" memory foam mattress topper. But our all time best selection is a 2 inch 4 lb memory foam topper on top of a 1 or 2 inch latex topper. With this combination you get the softness of the memory foam surface and the orthopedic support of latex"

Geez, haysdb--chill out!

First I want to say I have no relationship to anyone using the name cloud9 selling anything on Ebay or anywhere else. If I was selling memory foam there I wouldn't be buying retail at Mervyn's or Overstock.com. It seems like you got the runaround fron this vendor and you're coming down on me because we have the same username.

That being said. I get it. Making an "informed" decision is very important to you. That's fine to a point--we use this forum to keep informed, but I'm not sure that most people want or need to be quite that "informed." In fact, I kind of doubt most people make their bedding decisions with a 4-function calculator.

I bought a latex mattress kit after researching the subject to death and thought I was making an informed decision. Adjustable firmness, comfort exchanges--how could I go wrong? The only thing I didn't consider was that I just couldn't sleep on the thing without a backache.

I didn't waste another two months pointlessly over-researching the next mattress I bought. Sometime you just have to back away from all the facts and concentrate on how it feels.

Verysleepy just wanted to soften up a too firm mattress. It doesn't have to be rocket science. Unless, of course, you need it to be. I didn't get the impression from her post that she did.  So if you want to split hairs and insist it's not visco (according to the Polyurethane Foam Association... whose members are... Tempurdedic... Sensus..?) unless it conforms to a Tempurpedic or Sensus model of what visco is "supposed" to be, or that most foam being sold is "garbage" be my guest.

Frankly I don't care what the density or the ILD is, and I'm going to make a leap of pure faith and accept that it's 4 lb foam because that's what it was sold as. Sorry I left my scale and calculator at home when I went shopping so I couldn't verify it. Oh well.... What ever the hell it is, it's wonderfully comfortable and  that's all that's really important to me, so I am recommending it on that basis. Some people just want comfort. Not calculus.

And yeah, I did offer alternatives to latex, Tempurpedic, Sensus--which some people don't like specifically because of their temperture sensitve and slow recovery factors. My conclusion was that the memory foam toppers available from places like Bed & Bath & Beyond, Overstock.com or Mervyn's would probably be just fine, mainly because I have read posts from owners of Tempurpedic and Sensus products who have complained that they began sagging in a few years, so why pay a premium for it?
