Regardless of price? I think opinions would differ, but you might get some consensus around some of these names:

Handmade:
Vi-spring
McRoskey
Shifman
Duxiana
Hastens
Aireloom

Then, for the more mass market:

Stearns & Foster
Chatham & Wells

Hi..I'm a mattress salesperson and will gladly share what I know.. Please read my advice..I have a Very good customer service rating with my present employer and most importantly I very much enjoy my job..

ok..here we go>> Smiley

I.  Serta:  I would most recommend the Serta Perfect Sleeper and/or Perfect Night Lines.  For the most part, Serta offers the most resilient Continuous Wire coil system and places 33% more coils in the middle for enhanced support.  Most of this year's models incorporate a 5 inch dovetailed solid foam border which wraps around the coil system.  This has 2 benefits: First, you won't have to contend with sags occurring around the sides of the bed and this INCREASES your sleep space about 20%. Serta offers many different price ranges and comfort types throughout the Perfect Sleeper Line.   Serta Perfect Night is wonderful but more costly and offers very few benefits over and above the standard Perfect Sleeper Line.  Most Sertas offer a 10 year full replacement warranty against defects.

II.  King Koil:  Most of the New King Koil Spring Systems are posturized to offer you a decent level of support and usually runs about $200 less than the beginning Perfect Sleepers.  The King Coil Company is over 100 years old and offers an all around good mattress for the money.  They offer a foam encasement..not as substantial as Serta but it gets the job done nontheless.
The coil system is not as resilient as Serta.  King Koil uses a thinner gauge steel combined with a more open network of coils.  King Koil has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal in lieu of advertising..so they're able to offer a good solid product with a 10 year full replacement warranty in most cases.

III. Sealy:  Personally, I feel that the Posturepedic Line is costly for what it offers.  There is no foam encasement,  just a styrofoam enhanced edge, and the coil system is not as resilient as the Serta or King Koil Brands.

IV. Latex: Expensive but NO Coil system is offers the support and resiliency of latex mattresses.  Look at Latex mattresses with high resiliency foam components to cut costs while gaining other benefits.

V. Simmons:  If you and your partner suffer from motion disturbance..ask the salesperson to show you some World Class or Excepcionale Models.  These lines offer individually encased coils so that each side of the mattress operates independently of the other.

**If you're a side sleeper, please look for  plush or pillow top mattresses.  Stomach sleepers should stay with a cushion firm or firm comfort level.  Keep in mind that within each brand, the support systems are identical.  The only variations are pillowtop/plush/firm tops.  All comforts offer the same coil components and support. **

I hope this helps!

Interesting input, Miss Linda. Several of the brands you have mentioned here (e.g. Serta, Simmons) have not received the greatest reviews from others on this site. Not sure what to make of that...

Miss Linda,
We stopped at a local retailer that almost exclusively sells Serta products. We were interested in their Masterpiece line.  We had no previous exposure to Serta before but recognized their cute ads on T.V. using those disappointed numbered sheep having a hard time maintaining gainful full time employment, a reflection of our recent economic times. My review of May 2 follows:
Quote:
It looks like I'm answering part of my original question after having visited the local retailer, Off Track Bedding. They sell Serta mattresses exclusively and it turns out that the Masterpiece Sleep Product line (http://www.masterpiece-mattresses.com/) is Serta's premium brand e.g. Sterns & Foster is to Sealy. The construction details are different than Serta, particularly with the foundation, which has 8-way hand tied 9 gage coils in a locking steel grid. They use the same triple beam wood frame setup as Serta. The store only had four or five of the Classic two-sided mattresses and none of the newer Solo one sided models which we were interested in trying out.

While there, we tried out the (http://www.serta.com/) Serta Perfect Night innerspring and latex models. All of the upper end mattresses were priced under $2000 for the queens including the latex. We liked the Eurotop latex (Kapalua at this retailer - $1700 - Queen) but hated the continuous coil foundation that came with it, which made it too bouncy. We asked if the other Perfect Night Quad Beam foundation could come with it and they said it could but it would void their 30 night comfort guarantee as a non returnable set. It looks like we'll go back and retest the Sealy Reflexions.

The other Perfect Night innerspring mattresses, despite being comfortable, have a fire retardant barrier. My wife could smell something that was affecting her which we suspected was the retardant. I don't think we'd make it through one night with one of these mattresses after which it would be shipped out to the garage to sit alongside my oily rags.
